Ford has announced that the Ford RS performance car brand is back in the form of the new Ford Focus RS which will be unveiled at the 2008 London International Motor Show on 22 July 2008.
The Ford Focus RS is being created by dedicated Ford engineers lead by Jost Capito, Ford of Europe’s Vehicle Line Director for Performance Vehicles and will go on sale in early 2009.
On the exterior, the Focus RS features a special bright green paint with inlaid metallic flake, wider wheel arches and a wider track, deeper side rocker mouldings, a new front bumper with deep front airdam, chromed xenon headlamps, a new rear bumper with a large venturi tunnel to accommodate the chromed exhaust tailpipes and a black RS rear spoiler.
At the interior, the car features Recaro high-performance sports seats color-matched to the exterior, with RS’ and ‘Recaro’ logos, a stylish gloss, carbon-look trim center console, air vents, door grab handles, switchgear and gearshift surround with metallic highlights, a 6-speed gear shift graphic in RS blue, a three-spoke steering wheel with ‘Ford’ and ‘RS’ logos, aluminum foot pedals, and 3 additional gauges including turbo pressure gauge.
The Ford Focus RS is powered by a specially developed, turbocharged version of the Duratec 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine producing 300 PS (295 hp) and over 410 Nm of torque. The increase of power is made possible with the installation of a unique camshafts, a revised cylinder head and gasket, revised intake and exhaust manifold system and also with the help of reprogrammed engine management system. Early performance testing shows the car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in under 6 seconds.
The Focus RS is also equipped with ‘RevoKnuckle’, an innovative front suspension system that could reduce unwanted steering disturbance and torque steer, the impact of torque on steering in front-wheel driven vehicles. The RevoKnuckle works in conjunction with a Quaife Automatic Torque Biasing limited-slip differential.
The car stands on 19-inch wheels wrapped in 235/35 low profile Continental tires. The braking system has also been upgraded with 336mm ventilated front discs and 300mm rear discs. A special version of Ford’s ESP system has also been developed to allow a very sporty driving style before activating.
