Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione

The new Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione coupe is more of a grand tourer than an extreme sports car which capable to compete with Ferrari and Porsche around a track. Meanwhile the powertrain for the coupe is from Maserati’s own GranTurismo coupe front-mounted V8 engine, sending drive to the rear wheels via a two-piece driveshaft and a self-locking rear differential.

The engine is based on an original Ferrari design, but its displacement is increased from 4.2L to 4.7L. The engine could produce 450hp at 7,000rpm and peak torque of 470Nm at 4,250rpm. 80% of the torque is available from as low as 2000rpm with the help of the continuous variable valve timing on the intake camshafts and optimization of the combustion chamber and engine calibration. The exhaust system is electronically controlled where the flow of gases are modified by small valves.

To give the the car a well-balanced feel, Alfa engineers maintain the transaxle mounted gearbox. The engine could then be mounted closer to the firewall and this directly improves weight distribution by installing the gearbox up back. A pair of levers mounted behind the steering wheel are used to shift the six-speed semi-automatic gearbox.

The new Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione coupe is fitted with a double wishbone layout with forged aluminum components for the suspension. Meanwhile the brake calipers and 20 inch alloy wheels use lightweight metal material.

The classic look of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione was designed by designers at the Alfa Romeo Style Centre. The cabin is flourished with premium materials like leather, aluminum and carbon-fiber scattered throughout the cabin.

The 8C Competizione comes with two carbon-fiber buckets covered in red leather which could be adjustable with manual controls which provide plenty of support. Two sizeable aluminum paddles used for shifting gears are mounted to the steering column while buttons for reverse, auto and sport modes are located at the center dash.

Only 500 coupes are scheduled for production and at the moment there are already more than 1,200 orders in Alfa’s booking list.

The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione was featured at the 2006 Paris Motor Show last year.
