BMW has officially unveiled the BMW M3 GTS which is based on the M3 Coupe developed for Clubsport events. The GTS comes with modifications on the drivetrain, the suspension system, the body of the car and the interior. The M3 GTS will be officially launched in spring 2010.
The weight of the car has been reduced to less than 1,500 kg (3,300 lb) and the body comes with six-point seat belts and a roll cage installed behind the B-pillar. The weight is reduced by installing carbon fiber roof, titanium silencers, extra-light center console and door linings, the removal of the rear seats, automatic air conditioning and the audio system and custom sound insulation.
The BMW M3 GTS is powered by a 4.4-liter eight-cylinder engine that produces 450 hp. The improved engine features aluminum-silicon alloy crankcase constructed in bedplate design, individual throttle butterflies, anti-knock sensors with ion flow technology and wet sump oil supply.
The power from the engine is transmitted via a seven-speed M DKG Drivelogic with race-bred gearshifts transmission. The driver could shift gears both through the selector lever on the centre console and through special M shift paddles on the steering wheel.
The GTS still uses the M3 Coupe suspension system but it has been modified for supreme handling. The rear axle subframe is bolted firmly in position and the suspension features adjustment threads on the dampers for individual variation of the inbound and rebound strokes.
The M3 GTS is fitted with high-performance brake system featuring fixed callipers with six pistons up front and four pistons on the rear wheels. The car stands on 19-inch M light-alloy Competition wheels with 255/35 tires at the front and 285/30 tires at the rear.
To improve the aerodynamics, the car is fitted with a race-oriented front air dam and rear wing. The car also features BMW kidney grille with eloxy-plated chrome finishes at the side.
Inside, the BMW M3 GTS features bucket seats, carbon trim, M steering wheel finishes in alcantara, alcantara door and side panels, six-point seat belts, a fire extinguisher and emergency-off switch.
BMW will only manufacture the GTS to order and the price is expected to be around €115,000.
