Opel has announced that it will unveil the new Opel Insignia at the 2008 London Motor Show starting July 22 and will hit showrooms starting in November. The Opel Insignia was developed at GM Europe’s International Technical Development Center in Rüsselsheim, Germany, and will also be produced there. It is reported that the Insignia will replace the current Opel Vectra sedan and will be sold in the U.S. as the next-gen Saturn Aura.
The Opel Insignia is a 4.83 meter five-seater with a coupe-like roofline featuring a distinctive radiator grille with a newly-designed Opel emblem, a sweeping front and rear light “wing” signature and a “blade” side contour that begins directly behind the front wheel and glides through the entire side of the body at the exterior.
On the interior, the Insignia comes with high quality materials where the dashboard wraps around from the instrument panel to the door in a very sophisticated way. The insignia also features red ambient lighting and seats that are ergonomics, comfort and safe.
The Insignia also features the latest generation AFL Adaptive Forward Lighting system where 9 different light beam settings automatically adjust themselves to cater to various driving conditions which enhance safety and driving excitement. The LED daytime running lights in the AFL system also consume less energy than a conventional system featuring halogen lamps, thereby lowering CO2 emissions from 6 g/km to nearly zero.
The car will be offered as a front-wheel and all-wheel drive that come with FlexRide. In the all-wheel drive Insignia, the FlexRide mechatronic chassis system with its Adaptive Stability Technology helps the car adjust to prevailing driving conditions and allows the driver to select settings to match his mood.
The Opel Insignia is powered by 7 engine variants and they all meet Euro 5 emissions standards and come with either manual or automatic 6-speed transmissions. Four of them are petrol engines range from a 4-cylinder 115 hp unit to a V6 with 260 hp. The other three are direct-injection diesels featuring a displacement of 2.0 liter producing 110 to 160 hp. In the near future, the Insignia engine will come with an EcoFLEX version offering very low CO2 emissions.
