John and Helen Taylor (world record holder for fuel efficiency), fuel saving tips:
- Drive smoothly – aggressive driving could burn up to a third more fuel than relaxed driving. Avoid accelerating or braking too hard and try to keep the steering as smooth as possible.
- Use higher gear – when your car is at higher gear, the lesser your engine speed is. Change up the gear whenever you can without labouring the engine.
- Tune up the engine – fuel efficiency improve by up to 4 % when the engine is well tuned. Change your engine oil by following the manufacturer’s recommendation on servicing.
- Keep the tyres at the right pressure – correctly inflated tyres are safer and last longer. A tyre that is under inflated by just 1 psi can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 3 %.
- Avoid carrying excess weight – for every 45 kg you carry, your fuel efficiency could drop by 1 – 2 %. Hence keep your backseat and boot clear of unnecessary items that add weights to your car.
- Remove the roof rack – remove the roof rack if not in use because empty roof rack hinders the aerodynamic properties of the vehicle. It creates drag and increase fuel consumption to 5 %.
- Check the seal on the fuel cap is air tight – every time you open the tank, fuel evaporates. make larger fill-ups rather than topping up the fuel repeatedly to stop this problem.
- Keep calm – you’re more likely to make errors in judgement when you’re not calm. Fuel efficiency is all about smoothness and keeping calm is crucial to achieve good fuel economy.
