Daimler has released the images and details of the new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S which is a two-seater cabriolet with a carbon fiber fully retractable folding soft top capable to withstanding high speed. There will be only 150 units of the SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S to be built.
The name 722 S was inspired by the historic victory won at the classic Mille Miglia long-distance race in 1955 by British motor-racing legend Stirling Moss and his co-driver Dennis Jenkinson, in a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR with the starting number 722.
The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S is powered by a hand-built supercharged 5.5-liter V8 engine producing 650 hp (47 kW) and 820 Nm of maximum torque (SLR McLaren Roadster: 460 kW/626 hp, 780 Nm). The engine is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission developed by Mercedes-Benz is designed for high performance. The 722 S accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and reached 200 km/h in 10.6 seconds with the maximum speed of 335 km/h.
The car is also fitted with stiffer spring and shock absorbers and lowered by 10 mm at the front and rear for better handling and stability. The 722 S stands on lightweight 19-inch forged aluminum wheels and equipped with red brake callipers on the highly-resistant carbon-fibre/ceramic brake discs.
The roadster’s high-tech roof guarantees full day-to-day suitability in any weather conditions and allows the vehicle a top speed of 335 km/h and opens and closes semi-automatically in around 10 seconds. To improve the handling and aerodynamic, the car is equipped with an airbrake integrated into the boot lid, an enclosed underbody and a diffuser in the rear bumper to ensure the greatest possible downforce on the rear axle, airsplitter at the front end and small wheel spoilers to reduce turbulence at the rear axle.
The body of the 722 S is completely made of carbon-fibre materials (CFRP), except of the two aluminum frames, to reduce weight, exemplary energy absorption and therefore a high level of occupant safety, plus a torsional rigidity. The safety features are further increased with the use of unique carbon-fibre crash structures, steel-reinforced A-pillars and two fixed rollover bars, adaptive airbags, knee and sidebags, belt tensioners and a tire pressure monitoring system.
Inside, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S features sports bucket seats upholstered in a combination of semi-aniline leather/Alcantara with 300 SL red seams and 722 S lettering, high-grip and moisture-absorbing suede leather shift and parking brake levers, -zone automatic climate control, a high-quality BOSE Premium sound system, a multifunction sports steering wheel with shift paddles and a navigation system with an integrated radio and CD player.
The 150 units of the 722 S will be hand-built at the Formula 1 workshops of McLaren in Woking, England, and is available from January 1, 2009.
