The main driver for the new Opel E-Flex concept car is the Lithium-ion batteries. When the batteries power depleted, the diesel motor kicks in, to continue to move the car and also to restore power to the batteries via the on-board generator. Apart from the diesel engine, power can also be restored by ‘plugging-in’ the E-Flex to an electrical outlet.
The new 1.3-litre turbo diesel motor is designed by Opel engineers itself. The diesel motor is used to recharge the Lithium-ion batteries at around 1,500 and 1,800 rpm.
If the batteries are totally depleted, the engine can reach up to 3,200 rpm. When using the Lithium-ion batteries, the car could be driven for around 100 km (62 miles) and when in conjunction with the diesel motor, the range could go up to 775 km (480 miles).
Opel has also built a storage compartment for Segway and it could charge the Segway from its own on-board batteries.
The Opel E-Flex will debut at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show anytime now.
